8th Annual Leprechaun Party & Storytime

fairies palace at leprechaun partyIt’s time to party with the Leprechauns, who do hang around all year you know!  Join us Saturday, March 22 for an Open House between 5:30 and 8:30 for treats, treasure hunting, crafts, games, and STORIES!  I have such a great stock stories of leprechaun, fairy, trolls, mermaids, and little magical people from all over the wide wide world,  I can’t wait to share some with kids of any age.

We will have the Lucky Fairy Well set up again soon.  You can toss in a lucky coin, make a wish, and know your coins will continue to spread the joy donated to community literacy projects.

Give us a call or message if you have any questions!young reader at leprechaun party

Happy Birthday Robert Miller!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERATomorrow, November 6, our friend Robert Miller will be turning 90.  Surprised?  Probably, if you have not spoken to him of his age before, because he certainly does not look or act like 90!  He is continually my role model for staying active, eating well (with daily doses of chocolate included),  and continuing to learn and stretch the brain cells.  He would include creating art and making music on his list of necessary activities for well being, and he does indeed create art every day.

If you see him around town tomorrow, be sure to wish him well, but also please plan on stopping by the store on Saturday, November 9 for an Open House Birthday Celebration.  We will have a new art display up, with prints available to order, plus good food from The Secret Sandwich Society, Great Basin Bakery, and my kitchen, and some classic jazz sounds with saxophone, Bob’s favorite.  Chocolate birthday cake too of course!  We’ll be here from 6 – 8:30, and look forward to seeing you!

Ghostly Celebration – 2013 Haunted Bookstore

It may have started as an excuse for me to read ghost stories, but I love seeing our annual Haunted Bookstore become a tradition for a number of families!  This year we enjoyed the company of quite a few new families too, which is wonderful.  I was feeling a little sad that so many of my helpers have grown up and moved on over the past seven years, but we were fortunate indeed to have Allison briefly back from college to help, as well as Clara, Emma, Autumn, AJ, Katrina and Katie.  This party simply would not happen without the great help from young volunteers as well as my excellent staff, and our patient families.

Echoes of an old west ghost town filled this year’s event. In addition to my ghost stories,  we had Waltzing with a Ghost cake walk, ghost and haunted house crafts, a shooting gallery, and a quick hand of poker game.  Here’s some pictures in case you missed the fun!

Wonderful Robert Miller Prints Still Available

After some debate, we decided to keep the first showing of Robert Miller Prints available by special order.  The artworks are still on display, some now in the fiction room and some above the shelves in nonfiction as well, so you may look them over and make your choices.  We should have a print available within a few days.

And have you seen the new prints?  Wow!  They look wonderful on our wall and I think you will love them on your wall as well.  We can order these prints as well if we happen to be out of your favorite.  Come visit!

Busy Little Leprechauns

I have to say, we had some pretty adorable visitors this year for the 7th Annual Leprechaun Party!  Good story listeners (bless their hearts), great helpers (thanks Clara and Emma, first time behind the table!), tasty strawberries, and I am sure, many lucky wishes from coins tossed in the Fairy Well.  Enjoy some photos, and plan on being here next year if you missed it!

Leprechaun Party and Storytime – New Date, Same Fun Place!

Mark your calendars for the 7th Annual Leprechaun Party and Storytime!  (We’ve changed the date, so please REmark your calendars!)  We’ll have some wonderful troll stories to add to our (Diane’s) list of favorites, and the crafts will include fairy doors!  Everyone can use a magical entrance for the wee ones in the house or garden, so it should be fun.  Hmmm, there may be a troll game too… and you can plan on some special treats too!  Please call if you have any questions.

Welcome to Our New Bookstore Baby!

We are so, so happy to welcome baby Sarah Denise Janney to the world, and to our East Side Books family!  Her parents are Lindsey and James, and, oh yes, the lucky auntie is Diane!  We are all looking  forward to plenty of baby holding time!   She is a nice big, healthy girl, born at 12:36 this morning, 1/25/13.  Congratulations to Pam Vaughan for winning the Baby Janney Arrival Pool, AND the correct gender, for a $35 gift certificate.

101 Holiday Gift Ideas: #91-92 Community Benefit Books

If you still have all of your shopping to do (like me), or are just needing some stocking stuffers and maybe a little entertainment, today’s ideas will fit the bill!

First, we are carrying the 2013 Cultivating Community Calendar published by the Master Gardeners of Inyo & Mono Counties and the UC Cooperative Extension.  The Master Gardener’s Program has taken off locally with astounding results, and this fundraiser will certainly help fuel that progress.  It features Community Gardens up and down the Eastern Sierra – who knew there were 12 different community gardens!  Plus, there are tons of helpful gardening tips, freeze date statistics, and phases of the moon.  If you need a nudge to grow more of your own food or want to support growing more food community wide, this is the ticket.  Local food is the way to go, thank you Master Gardeners for helping that effort.

The second idea is not actually in our store, but I’ll suggest it anyway.  Our friends at Manzanar National Historic site are holding a booksigning and talk by Hank Umemoto for his book From Manzanar to Mount Whitney during the next two weekends.  Mr. Umemoto is reported to be a very vivacious and interesting storyteller, so I know it will be well worth the visit. (I am so glad that more stories from Manzanar are coming out before they are lost too).  Nothing better than a personally inscribed, interesting book to thrill a reader or history buff.  The Manzanar Book Store is also well stocked with potential gifts, so by all means add it to your shopping destination list!
